If you set your CD/DVD device to boot, and the bootable linux distro won't boot,
you either have a hardware issue, a bad ISO image or a bad burn from the ISO, or
the drivers needed for the new motherboards are not incorporated in the Linux package
yet (in which case, it won't work). All of the Ubuntu ISO's I have downloaded and
burned for the past 2 years have booted in new and old machines without a problem,
however, I haven't tried your particular Asus board yet. You could have an issue
between the motherboard and the optical drive. I had the same issue on some earlier
Asus boards. It wouldn't get along with some brands of drives so it would corrupt
the data. There are multiple issues that could be effecting you on this one.
You can't have a typical DOS environment loaded and load/install Linux. The two
aren't compatible.
