Even if you got proper-sized RAM sticks in it,
I wonder if you could find W98 device drivers for all the hardware.
(There's a tiny chance that Linux drivers don't exist for those either,
but I'd rate that as small odds.)

Uh huh.

Of course it won't--and this seems to contradict the last statement you made.
You run **DOS** apps under DOS.
You DON'T run *Windoze* app under DOS nor *Linux* apps under DOS.
How you got there, I don't know
--but it sounds like your CMOS Boot Precedence might not be what you think it is.
I'm wondering if you even hear/see the CD drive spin up on boot.
If you now can't get the CD to load a Linux kernel into RAM,
make sure that drive is listed FIRST in the Boot Precedence.
If you got the box to boot to the Windoze CD,
and the Ubuntu media worked to install Linux on the other box,
that's the only gotcha that makes sense
--unless you've damaged the media or the drive quit working in the meantime.
