It's not clear what you are trying to say.
I heard:
**The only device driver I can get for this sound card is a Win9x driver.**
   and
**There's a piece of software that requires THIS sound card.**
Is that about it?

|But I can't get into a dos prompt (it aborts)
|
WRT W98, when I hear "DOS prompt", I think "Shelled out to a DOS Window"
--but that's not what I'm hearing.

It sounds like what *you* are trying to do is a Startup in Real Mode DOS.
True?

What do you plan to do when you get to DOS?
(If you had said,
"The only device driver I can get for this sound card is a DOS driver",
I could understand *that*.)

WHAT METHOD are you using to get to a point other than Normal Mode Windows?
   and
What do you see when it "aborts"?

|nor safe mode
|
...and the biggest question:
Why isn't Normal Mode Windows OK?
