I have never found the disk tools that come with Windows
or those made by third party companies totally reliable.
Then there is the problem that Western Digital (WD) Data Lifeguard Tools
are only designed to work on WD drives. The exception is when it comes
to cloning the old drive on to the new WD drive.
Even if your old drive is also a Western Digital, newer version disk
tools may not work with older WD drives and vice versa. Look up the
WD support download page to check out what's available.
Whatever the problem, you have reached the point where I would write
zeros to the entire drive. If your old drive is also a WD there are
WD tools you can download. Otherwise I recommend the free version of
Kill Disk.
Make sure you use the option to wipe the entire drive clean and not
just each individual partition. You should then be able to reformat
your old drive as a single partition.
Provided their old hard drive isn't from the stone age, I have never
understood why people want to install the operating system on their
new large capacity drive instead of using their existing drive as
before and installing the new drive as a capacious slave WHERE ALL
THEIR DATA WOULD BE RELATIVELY SAFE in the event of a Windows problem
which requires reformatting and reinstallation.
