|under c:\windows\helpdesk\sfc there is a .dll file (728kb)

Everytime I do a rebuild and do an sfc is always picks up on setupx.dll as corrupted
in the Windows\System folder. I've never found out why because the replacement file
on the Win98SE CD is exactly the same, date, time and filesize. I wouldn't worry
about that file.

When I do a system restore I always use Scanreg /restore with a space in between.
I've never tried /fix as /restore always fixes.

You may as well delete it because it won't be used again.

As gewg says when Windows starts up in Safe Mode only the basic system drivers are
used just to get Windows running.

There is another Windows exe that I use on occasion.

C:\WINDOWS\SCANREGW.EXE

This will check the registry for errors and report then it will ask if you want to
make another backup, just press the Yes button it doesn't hurt. Make a short-cut
for this file so you know where is is for quick use.

Now I know I said earlier that if push comes to shove do a format and a rebuild.
When was you system last rebuilt?

Start your computer up whilst holding the CTRL pressed untill you see the DOS menu.
Then select Command Prompt Only No.5. Then just type Dir and return,
this will show all files on the Root of your drive.

If there are to many to see in one to type Dir /p which is a Pause switch.
When the screen fills just press a key to let it file again. When you see the WINDOWS
< DIR > or PROGRA~1 < DIR > look at the date when created. Mine was done a month
ago 30/11/08.

If its more that a year then do a rebuild, you will be supprised of the difference.
I'm presuming you have the Win98SE CD?
