disappearing ethernet card

Went to Dell xp on dsl. Set up this IBM Net Vista(my old primary computer)
which was on dial up. Removed dial up modem and reinstalled 98SE( after
formatting) and installed the ethernet card which came with the unit.
Card is an Accton shipped new with the computer and drivers are straight
from IBM (Loveno).
Want this as a backup and connected thru a router but haven't gotten that
far yet.
I.E. 6 sp-1 with as many updates as is possible. Connected first time (AT@T
dsl) no issues. Used it for about 3 days for testing and adding things such
as Adobe reader, "The Fie Splitter ect. Standard things I've always used.
Packed it up for later use. Couple of weeks later set it back up and no
joy. Checking under devices, no network adapter shown. Just disappeared. In
network, Client for Microsoft Networks, Accton fast ethernet controller,
and tpc/ip all show and bindings are intact.
This problem occurs every time it is left off for a week or more. 4 times
now. Exact same problem. Hope someone there can point me to a solution.
One issue, and I can't remember when it happened. On bootup, a popup tells
me it is looking for drivers for an "unknown" device. There are only 3 pci
slots, and the only one being used is for the ethernet card and that
message appears whether the card is installed and working or not.
Thanks in advance..
Jack....
