Reading the packaging is always advised before handing over your cash.
When buying hardware, make sure the label **specifically** lists *YOUR* OS.
SUPPORT THOSE VENDORS WHO SUPPORT **YOU**
and stop giving your money to manufacturers that don't deserve it.

When using a >10 year old M$ OS,
it *is* important to do your homework ahead of time.
(Though Linux has the best out-of-the-box hardware support of **any** OS,
checking compatibility there is advised there as well.)
A modern OS (e.g. FREE Linux) will have an approved hardware list.
In addition, as the OP mentioned,
a modern OS doesn't have this (USB) hoop to jump through.
Since the OP stated that Maximus Decim's driver worked for him
and Keith didn't provide the names of the brands on which these WON'T work,
Keith's post is just noise (as is quite common for him).
