The intermittent nature of this bothers me. More below.

|Meantime, it gives me:

Typically, the list of things to do with an error message like that goes this way:

1) Do a Registry restore.
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1109567064
(The problem in that thread is different, but the steps are the same.)

Another version--including *a caveat*.
(The sooner you act on problems that you notice, the easier they are to fix.)

2) Reinstall the application program.

This is a reference to a list of things it *could* be:

3) Do a SCANDISK on your hard drive using the Thorough option.
That option is a "surface test"
and is a check that addresses the intermittent nature of this problem. In effect,
it checks to see how the magnetic oxide layer on the disk's platter is ageing.

This test should be #4 on the list, but it's easier to do than a RAM test.
(You already have the tool for a surface test.)
IMO, the next item down would be more likely to turn up the real culprit
--if this is, in fact, hardware-related.

4) Test your RAM overnight.
This is best done using a specially-made bootable floppy:
http://www.memtest86.com/download.html
You want the one for the floppy for Windows.

Here's the directions for making the bootable floppy from the file you download:
