Thats a new one on me too.

If you have apps running in the background then Scandisk will keep stopping and restarting.
After 10 times it will say its tried 10 times but there is something causing a problem,
do you want to continue.

If you close all apps and just have your desktop showing do a Ctrl+Alt+Del to show
Task Manager. You can End Task everything accept Systray and Explorer then try it
again. In fact you don't need much running if your not using it whats the point.
Every app that runs in the background is using system resources (memory). How many
icons do you have showing in the Systray (next to the clock)?

As I've said before you can use CCleaner to stop items running when Windows starts
up be careful you don't remove anything thats critical and don't stop Systray and
Explorer. Is you Firewall running all the time? Unless you are surfing all the time
whats the point. In fact I've never needed a Firewall. You don't need a virus checker
running all the time some of those can use a lot a resources. Whats the point, anything
you are given or you download you can check just that file or folder for a virus
threat.

Which virus checker do you have installed?

You could always start the computer up in Safe Mode and do a full scan from there.
That way only the minimum will be running (Systray and Explorer).

Are you trying to do a full drive scan? You maybe better of doing this in DOS its
more graphical the Windows.

Start you computer up and keep the Ctrl key pressed until you see the DOS menu with
Safe Mode listed. Select 5) Command Prompt Only and at the C:\ type in Scandisk
and Enter and follow the instructions on the screen. When asked if you want to do
a surface scan just press Enter. Depending on how big your hard drive is is could
take a while. My 20GB drive takes about 40 minutes which is quicker that Windows.
