Thank you gewg_. I've been investigating the links which you kindly provided, and I think I'm getting the idea.

I found some useful information about the Microsoft Layer for Unicode at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Layer_for_Unicode. Happily, I already have UNICOWS.DLL installed.
