It's obvious that you made the effort

When security software[1] for Windoze won't install,
it's a pretty good indication that you are pre-infected.

10 year old M$ OSes don't get much of a rise out of many vendors these days.
As you've intimated, app writers are dropping support for Win9x left and right.

I've found that a solution to an OS that requires band-aids plastered all over it
(and STILL gets infected) is to use an OS that doesn't need those
because it has security at its core and isn't Defective By Design.

...and if you have <256MB of RAM:

The CDs are bootable to a graphical desktop
so you can do a test drive without installing anything.
Mint 7 is based on Ubuntu 9.04 from April of 2009.
We're expecting Mint 8 (based on Ubuntu 9.10) by the end of the year.
This Free(dom) Software is also gratis.

[1] ...and especially when pseudo-security software won't install...

Note: While many deride the notion of a software firewall,
I think that filtering egress traffic is a pretty good idea
(hardware firewalls can't do that).
Of course, when that software is on the same box it's protecting
and that box is running Windoze, enthusiasm wanes a bit.
