Device drivers for 1999-era hardware will be the big stumbling block with M$ (just as trying to run an old M$ OS on new hardware is a problem). OTOH, with Linux, device drivers for old gear is NOT an obstacle. Linux has the best hardware support of ANY OS. In addition, Linux Mint has the best out-of-the-box experience of ANY distro (comes with codecs, fonts, Java, Flash, Acrobat Reader...).
