I had both of the free Betas of Vista and tested it on several of my systems. I wasn't impressed, and never bought a copy. I already have Win7 running on a system here this time, although it is reluctant to let me be as unconscious of security between my various PCs as I prefer to be.

I ran Win95 on 486's back in the day, but was already running Pentiums (at least one) by the time Win98 came along, but neither of those (Dx4/100 and P1 MMX 166) had more than 128 MBs of RAM (very expensive at the time). Win98 didn't seem slower than Win95 to me, although WinME did seem slower, when it came along (matched up to a P-II/400 PC).

The first time I ever experienced slowness from Win98 and was annoyed about it was this summer, on a duplicate (to some extent) of the P-II I had when WinME was new -- both shared the Intel 440BX chipset, and the one I built with an Abit BX-6 runs about 20% slower in Win98 than it does in Win2000!

Shortly after that one was tested, I had a Micronics MB running Intel's 430TX chipset that ran Win98 like a snail, slower than it would've run on a 486 Dx2/66, but the CPU was a 200 MHz P1 MMX processor. I tore that one down to send the bad MB to the recyclers.
