Zone won't load on boot

I run ZoneAlarm version:6.1.737.000
and Avast.
Everytime I do any PC maintenance,
like ccCleaner or defrag,
Zone won't load on boot until after
maybe 5 reboots, when it is magically fine.
Meantime, it gives me:
"ZLCLIENT caused an invalid page fault in
module FRAMEWRK.DLL at
016f:5041ee58. Any suggestions?

The intermittent nature of this bothers me. More below.

Typically, the list of things to do with an error message like that goes this way:
1) Do a Registry restore.
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1109567064
(The problem in that thread is different, but the steps are the same.)
Another version--including *a caveat*.
(The sooner you act on problems that you notice, the easier they are to fix.)
cache
of www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1047869242
2) Reinstall the application program.
This is a reference to a list of things it *could* be:
cache
of www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article07-002
3) Do a SCANDISK on your hard drive using the Thorough option.
That option is a "surface test"
and is a check that addresses the intermittent nature of this problem. In effect,
it checks to see how the magnetic oxide layer on the disk's platter is ageing.
This test should be #4 on the list, but it's easier to do than a RAM test.
(You already have the tool for a surface test.)
IMO, the next item down would be more likely to turn up the real culprit
--if this is, in fact, hardware-related.
4) Test your RAM overnight.
This is best done using a specially-made bootable floppy:
http://www.memtest86.com/download.html
You want the one for the floppy for Windows.
Here's the directions for making the bootable floppy from the file you download:
cache
of www.digital-handyman.com/ftp/Memtest86%2520-%2520Memory%2520Diagnostic%2520Page.txt

Hi Marjorie.
Why do you need 2 virus checkers installed?
Don't think you will be double protected.
CCleaner will stop ZoneAlarm from running on startup if you have removed it from
Tools\Startup

Hi Keith,
The Zone I run is just an old free firewall version.
I'm worried --I can't get Scandisk
to get to the end. Once the error
was titled, "Science"...a
new one on me!

Thats a new one on me too.
If you have apps running in the background then Scandisk will keep stopping and restarting.
After 10 times it will say its tried 10 times but there is something causing a problem,
do you want to continue.
If you close all apps and just have your desktop showing do a Ctrl+Alt+Del to show
Task Manager. You can End Task everything accept Systray and Explorer then try it
again. In fact you don't need much running if your not using it whats the point.
Every app that runs in the background is using system resources (memory). How many
icons do you have showing in the Systray (next to the clock)?
As I've said before you can use CCleaner to stop items running when Windows starts
up be careful you don't remove anything thats critical and don't stop Systray and
Explorer. Is you Firewall running all the time? Unless you are surfing all the time
whats the point. In fact I've never needed a Firewall. You don't need a virus checker
running all the time some of those can use a lot a resources. Whats the point, anything
you are given or you download you can check just that file or folder for a virus
threat.
Which virus checker do you have installed?
You could always start the computer up in Safe Mode and do a full scan from there.
That way only the minimum will be running (Systray and Explorer).
Are you trying to do a full drive scan? You maybe better of doing this in DOS its
more graphical the Windows.
Start you computer up and keep the Ctrl key pressed until you see the DOS menu with
Safe Mode listed. Select 5) Command Prompt Only and at the C:\ type in Scandisk
and Enter and follow the instructions on the screen. When asked if you want to do
a surface scan just press Enter. Depending on how big your hard drive is is could
take a while. My 20GB drive takes about 40 minutes which is quicker that Windows.

Thanks, Keith and gewg,
I finally managed a thorough scandisk
(which I was already trying in Safe Mode)
thanks to your advice re DOS, and
followed with a defrag, where I had
problems. Twice, it told me to run a
Standard Scandisk, which I did, and the
defrag finished.
I reinstalled Zone, and so far, so good.
Here's my PC info:
Gateway 1510915.CEL Essential 400C.
PentiumII. WIN98(1st ed).
Total Size: 4GB.
Running Avast Antivirus and
Zone Firewall version:6.1.744.001;
using Ad-Aware.
Items in System Tray:
Task Scheduler, Multi-media Control,
ATI, 3D Clip, Zone, Avast. (I never use
Task Scheduler or ATI.)
And yes, Keith, I surf. I google-search
a LOT and read news... all kinds of things.
I'm always curious about something.

First edition? Bye gum I've never even seen a first edition Marjorie.
Have you ever thought of getting the Second Edition? Do a search of eBay they are
quite cheap. There will be a lot more updates over the first edition.

Hahaha Keith...
Yep, she's an oldie. I have a 2nd Ed CD, but
it's the OEM (?) --the kind you have to
format first. I also have an XP, but same
deal, plus I don't think the old ship could
handle it. If somebody'd hand me a new
Dell I wouldn't complain. 8)
Meantime, I'm going to start a new thread.

Thats no problem download a WinME boot disk from BootDisk
then you can do a format and a fresh install. The only slight problem you may have
is if you don't have the drivers for your additional hardware e.g. sound card, graphics
card, printer etc but these are available of the web.
Its always better to do a fresh install never try a re-install it can cause more
problems that it corrects.

Not necessarily:
cache
of http://www.infocellar.com/win98/win98-oemcd-install.htm
As Keith notes, it's good to have your ducks in a row
--in case you DO have to install/reinstall one day.
This is a good tool (a 2.5MB download):
