hello, i used to use norton and kinda know what you are going through, ok, let me
try to get up to speed, you say that this is your sister product (nav) and that you
had lost or no longer have the original software, you purchese online protections,
is that via a yearly subsrcribtion to sysmantec? ok, also what version of norton
is it, 2000,2002,2004? and do you know if it was puchased and installed by your sister
manually or off the net? ok lets assume that it was purchased off the net, maybe
the reason you dont have the origianl software cd, (if she chose not to purchase
a seperate cd) after purchase, you have to put in the product key to recieve a yearly
subsrcibtion service from symantec, lets say she did. now when it gives you that
error box is it a pop up box or a red "x" in the main window? if its just the red
"x" did you first restart the computer first to see if everything started automatically?
if yes then it may not be confugured to start automatically (norton is famous for
doing this after awhile) check in nortons main window under options, if a menu appears,
click NORTON ANTIVIRUS>in the options window, under system, click AUTO-PROTECTION.,
ensure that start auto-protection when windows starts up is checked because it may
not be confugured to show the auto protection icon in the tray. ok, if that is working
and your still getting the error, in the main window, click your options button again,>in
menu click NORTON ANTIVIRUS, then email, MAKE SURE THAT THE BUTTON ON scan incoming
email is checked, if not check it and press ok. try that, HOPEFULLY that is all it
is, but bit of advice, the AVG and ZONE ALARM FIREWALL (both free) are the easiest
way to go, try to further convince your sister. also, it would be advised personally
by me, to download and install either mozilla or mozilla firefox as a seperate browser
because sometimes when norton takes a dump, it takes IE with it, you can find a quick
link to them on annoyances home page, good luck
