sound issue with ME

With some of the newer games, my sound drops out when playing. If I exit game, sound
returns and I can go back to game. I have a refurbished HP Pavilion 7955 with Windows
ME, Pentium 4 - and, apparently, onboard sound (Analog AC97). I've run msconfig,
dxdiag, step-by-step config, etc. - finding nothing wrong. I've had to disable vxd
files due to another problem but I can live without the internet. Should I install
a new sound card? If so, what works best with Windows ME? Thank you.
