I managed to solve my problem, as well. Essentially a matter of finding where the needed files were hidden on the C drive (they don't show up in a WinExplorer search!), then pointing the OS to them. Mine were in c:\windows\options\install\base2.cab. Got the "found new hardware" dialogue box back by plugging the mp3 into a usb port, and REMOVING the yellow-question-marked usb resource in Device Mgr. This prompted the OS to re-setup the connection so I could tell it where to find the files. The three files needed were: usbntmap.sys usbstor.sys usbmphlp.pdr Hope this is helpful to someone in future.
