Hello,

I hope that you get this message. I have a Windows ME operating system as well.
I have had that same problem with my computer in the past. I have a 1.1g processor
with a geforce128mb video card. The way that I handled the problem was to go into
selective start by clicking on the start icon on the task bar at the bottom of the
screen. Then click on the run icon. Type in the command "msconfig" and then click
on ok. you should get the system configuration utility then click on the startup
tab. If you are using Windows ME still you will have to go and uncheck each box
individually. What this will do is free up your ram. Which you mentioned was at
300Mb+. The more boxes that you uncheck the more your ram you will be freeing up.
This should solve the issue of your computer locking up and the scandisk timing
out. Try not to uncheck everything in the startup because you will get what I like
to call the "new blue screen of death." When you uncheck everything in the startup
you will not be able to use the esc key to get out of the screen goes blue and tells
you to hit the esc key to escape. Instead you will be sent to a second blue screen
telling you that you need to hit ctrl+alt+del in order to restart your computer.
When you do this your computer will restart and you do the whole checkdisk routine.

As for your CD-ROM drive this might fix your CD-ROM drive. I am not sure on that
you might have what I like to call a "Home Grown Virus" meaning that you have had
so many conflicts with your start up that one or more of your files may have been
corrupt beyond repair. Also when the same thing happened to me I got so mad that
I just formatted everything and and said "@*(#$*&@#$@#" if you know what I mean.

You see when you start up your computer the msconfig tells the computer to start
these program in the background kind of like your body telling you blink your eyes
to keep them moist, but what would happen if your body kept telling your eyes to
keep blink and not to stop. We here in the "Real World" call that Obsessive Compusive
Disorder or OCD. In the virtual world it is what I like to call a Home Grown Virus
or HGR. Like I said earlier I had been there seen it and done it and I do not want
to do that again.

As for the person that said you may need a new computer or power supply. I do not
know what they where talking about. They probably have not had a computer for very
long. LOL Although I would consider getting more ram if your computer can handle
it. I would like to hear if you got your computer up and running and if my solution
help you resolve your cd-rom problem. If you could please respond to this message
board that would be great.

Sincerely,
Trying To Help
