Operating System Mistake!! PLEASE HELP!

We have a Compaq Computer and had Windows ME installed on it. We had a lot of problems,
including tons of errors. A friend of ours decided to format the hard drive with
a Gateway Windows XP Cd. Of course when it finished formatting the hard drive and
installing the software, it didn't install it properly due to it isn't a Gateway
Computer. Now, my computer wont run at all. Can someone tell me what I need to do
to fix this problem? Can i just buy a new boot Cd and recover windows or should I
buy a completely new installation CD with the full version of the operating system
on it and try downloading it, or will none of this work? Thank you for your time
and being so sweet by helping me with this serious problem that I'm having! That
is if someone will help... PLEASE! :) Have a wonderful evening!
