Supposed "Low Disk Space" Problem ?

I started getting a pop up reporting low disk space about 2 months back, and it asked if I would like to delete cookies, useless files etc. which I did do. It also popped a little icon (looked like a horizontal desk top without a monitor) in the tray next to the clock on my machine. This was happening frequently. I checked the drive space and it stated I had 125mb +/- left on the hard drive. The pop up said I should have 200mb, I believe, to run the system properly. I deleted some programs but it didn't seem to make much difference in the available hard drive space. I ran virus scans fairly frequently as I didn't think I had put much on the hard drive since I got the machine and I suspected something wasn't right! All scans came up clean! I use the Verizon Yahoo Online Protection provided by Computer associates as I use Verizon DSL for my internet connection. I recently stopped using the machine for about a full week. I started to use it again and as I had a freeze up of the browser (IE 6) I decided to check the hard drive space to see if a low disk space problem was causing it. I found I now have 5+ gigs of space on my hard drive! Anyone care to give an opinion as to what caused this phenoninon? I'm concerned the machine might have been compromised as it were and was being used for who knows what while I was online. BTW, the machine is an old Dell Dimension XPS R450. I also run Zone Alarm (free version) on the machine. Any opinion and/or suggestions? Thanks!!!
