new memory(dell 8100)install vista

i have a dell 8100 with little memory and it is a second comp.. can i remove the
old memory and install new memory and then install my vista on it. it is not functioning
right now as there is no space left on the memory so nothing loads up anymore. i
have checked for virus' but that was not the problem. it was 128mb 64+64. can i
install 256+256 or use the same 64+64 to upgrade. Any help would be great.thanks
