Does the Device Manager show/list the USB device and as operating properly?  If you 
are running Win ME it is USB 1.1 (if it is 2.0 it will say "Enhanced") where as many 
newer devices will work  best on USB 2.0 with some only working on USB 2.0.  May 
or may not be an issue here.  Can't tell that without physically seeing the machine 
to check it out.

What is the brand and model of the computer?

As for the Coby, there are a lot of complaints on it.  Never worked with one so can't 
confirm but many people report that the interface isn't good and that you should 
save your money.

As for the Sony, there are many fakes being sold so it depends on where you may have 
purchased it as to the possibility that it isn't a real Sony device.
