The Windows folder will be in the root directory of the C drive. It's there somewhere
but may not be named Windows at all. If you didn't have one, Windows wouldn't even
boot up. You need an installation disk to repair the system or to reinstall. Not
having a reinstall disk is like driving a car without a spare tire and having a flat.
Basically you need one as eventually you will need it on a Win 9X system. Those
of us who have worked with Windows 9X and earlier versions will tell you that you
need to reinstall the system periodically as it can't keep itself cleaned out and
error resistant/free for long. I used to reinstall twice a year. I used disk imaging
software to speed up the process, that way, I didn't have to reinstall everything
from scratch. I just dumped a clean install right back on the drive, and in less
than a half hour, I would be back up and running from a crash or anything else that
might happen.
That being said, you need to get a recovery or install disc because you will need
it sooner rather then later IME (In My Experience, and that goes back before Windows
1.0).
As for your error, hard to tell from a forum. It could be malware infection, damage
to the system or the fact that support on websites is being dropped for IE 5, and
has been almost/or totally dropped for IE4 and earlier. You never want to drop more
than two versions behind on the web browser. IE 7 has been out for several years
with IE 8 on the horizon. IME, Win 9X will run IE 6 on some more powerful and faster
Win 9X machines but many won't run it reliably. Most pros I know say that IE 5.5
is best for Win 9X. IE 6 was really designed for and leverages the XP system. It
takes a lot more horsepower to run IE 6 but be aware that updates to keep your system
safe if running IE 6 won't work with the Win 9X operating system. They (updates)
only work with W2K and XP (NT systems basically) or higher even though they say they
are installed. It's a false sense of security that MS isn't telling people up front!!!
You might be better off trying an older version of Firefox even from a security standpoint.
New versions of Firefox won't support Win 9X either. Basically, support for Win
9X is disappearing from software as time goes on, so expect more issues and failures.
