problems with sound

I've had this Compaq Armada 1750 for about a year now and when I got it the sound was working properly. Sometime about five months ago I turned on my computer and I went to play my music I saved and there was no sound, I've tired everything. When I went to sounds and multimedia properties and clicked on the audio tab all the boxes were shaded grey. hopefully someone can help me. Thanks!
