Not sure what you have, but Win ME and W2K are two totally different operating systems.
The only similarity is that the Graphical User Interface (GUI) in W2K looks the
same as Win ME for the most part.

If you are presented with a screen at boot up to choose Win ME or W2K, then you have
a dual boot system. Otherwise, for Win ME and W2K to be stated anywhere on the system,
you would have had to have modified the operating system to read as such. Even then,
it is only Win ME or W2K running so it's not clear which one you have at this point.

My original post still stands however. You either have hardware incompatibilities
(BIOS/settings/older hardware) or failure, or you have software/program/driver issues.

In hibernation mode, the computer will shut down and completely power off, meaning,
that you would have to restart the computer as you would normally, after doing a
normal shutdown.

Standby, leaves the machine running in a low power state, something that the BIOS
can trigger, independant of Windows. If this is what's happening, Windows may not
be compatible with it and you can have the problem you are having now. As I said
previously, check the BIOS settings when you boot up for power saving options and
disable them if enabled. They are not part of Windows and can cause the issue you
have now. If they are already disabled. Then you have incompatibilities with Windows
in either hardware or software, possibly a corrupt Windows install (if it worked
correctly at one time but doesn't now).

One last issue on older systems is that if you have a USB keyboard/mouse instead
of a PS2 style and the BIOS isn't enabled properly for legacy USB options, the mouse
and/or KB may not wake up the computer, and this includes any mouse or keyboard with
a PS2 to USB adaptor. Lastly IME, some machines can only be "woke up" by pressing
the power up button, such as on some laptops..
