Internet Explorer 6 - Send Shortcut to Desktop

I'm suffering a minor annoyance with Windows ME, when I run Internet Explorer 6 (version 6.0.2800.1106).

When I use the option FILE > SEND > SHORTCUT TO DESKTOP in IE6, a shortcut to the current page being displayed in Internet Explorer is created on my desktop. Fine, no problem.

However, 5 minutes (or so) later a second shortcut is created on my desktop! This time the link is a defective one: if I click it, the following message pops up: "This Internet Shortcut cannot be opened because failed to run"

When I examine the faulty link (by right-clicking on it, then selecting "Properties") I find that it only has the "General" tab, not the "Web Document" tab that contains the URL.

Does anyone know why the (unwanted) faulty second link is being created, or how to prevent this?

This version of IE6 has always done this on me (ever since I up-graded from IE 5.5 some years ago).

Ed
