PLEASE HELP! 2nd hard drive with winME

Hi, I had a small master hd (7 gigs) on which winMe was loaded, and a larger slave
(60 gigs) on which my docs were. after getting the "windows protection error" i
decided to reload windows. with a winMe setup disk, i reformatted the master drive
and reinstalled winME on it. unfortunately now the slave is not being recognized
by windows. it simply doesn't show up ..(i'm not sure if DOS does either). in device
manager, "GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE 47" is flagged under disk drives, and there is a
question mark for "PRIMARY IDE CONTROLLER (DUAL FIFO)" under hard disk controllers.
both the master and slave are recognized in bios, and show up. do i need a driver
or something? please help! thanks

Ever since AGP was added to PCs, there have been sets of drivers for the motherboards'
onboard devices. You skipped using the MB CD during your reinstall of WinME.

hmm, i see. only i don't think i had a motherboard cd with my setup package..
i also tried taking out the drive, putting it into a usb enclosure, and connecting
it to a different computer externally. it is not being recognized now by any computer.
the pc sees it as a generic usb device, but not as a HD.
thanks again

Windows didn't install a driver for the IDE controller on the motherboard or it's
having a problem of some type. It is probably running in a generic PIO mode, instead
of the faster DMA mode. If you don't have a CD or floppy with the motherboard drivers
on them, you can try the manufacturers website for the motherboard, or the manufacturer
of the machine. If you know the chipset provider on the motherboard, you can sometimes
find drivers on their site also. Until that is updated/corrected, you may not be
able to see all of the drives and/or it will be as slow as molasses (lots of HDD
activity for a simple task etc)..
