Internet Explorer 6 - Send Shortcut to Desktop

I'm suffering a minor annoyance with Windows ME, when I run Internet Explorer 6 (version
6.0.2800.1106).
When I use the option FILE > SEND > SHORTCUT TO DESKTOP in IE6, a shortcut to the
current page being displayed in Internet Explorer is created on my desktop. Fine,
no problem.
However, 5 minutes (or so) later a second shortcut is created on my desktop! This
time the link is a defective one: if I click it, the following message pops up: "This
Internet Shortcut cannot be opened because failed to run"
When I examine the faulty link (by right-clicking on it, then selecting "Properties")
I find that it only has the "General" tab, not the "Web Document" tab that contains
the URL.
Does anyone know why the (unwanted) faulty second link is being created, or how to
prevent this?
This version of IE6 has always done this on me (ever since I up-graded from IE 5.5
some years ago).

Well this is one option I've never needed to use Ed. I've just tried it a few times
and it works everytime.
Why do you need a web link short-cut on your desktop? What is wrong with your favorites?

Sure it works, as I said. But it then saves the link a second time, after
a delay of about 4 or 5 minutes; and this second copy of the link doesn't
work.
So I typically end up with two links saved on the desktop. And it's not immediately
clear which is the one that will work.
I save links for a wide variety of purposes. I expect lots of people do. And I find
it inconvenient to have all my links saved in Internet Explorer's Favorites folder.
I regularly need to find a link without having to wade through dozens (hundreds!)
in the Favorites folder. So I need to stop IE6 from saving two copies of the link
on the desktop, when I only wanted one (working!) copy.

Ok then open NotePad and check the properties of these links and copy and paste them
into NotePad. You will be able to see the difference to the one that works and the
ones that don't.
I've tried it a few times and everyone works for me.

An interesting work-around. But what I want is a solution, to stop it from happening.

No, I won't be doing that. This is a minor annoyance, in non-critical software.
