I Lose Settings After Vista Updates!!!!!!!!!!!!

On several occasions after Vista updates via the automatic updates feature, I've
lost all of my settings after the reboot, such as: My desktop background reverts
to the basic Vista; many of the shortcuts on my desktop disappear; I have to reinstall
Outlook & setup my email accounts; the sound settings for Vista change, i.e. the
sound when I click an icon; I lose my home page tabs & search default in IE7, and
I have to run the "Run Once" when I first open IE7; the My Documents folder reverts
from where I have it set (second hard drive), to the original location (c:\users\etc
. . .).
Is there any way to avoid this, or to ensure that it doesn't happen? VERY ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
