Windows Photo Gallery Won't Open Large Files

I don't know why I never noticed this before but I've been trying to view really
large images in Windows Photo Gallery but when I do I get the the following error:
"Photo Gallery can't open this picture or video. The file appears to be damaged or
corrupted."
It does this with both JPEG and TIFF image files (so far) that appear to exceed a
certain pixel dimension limit and not necessarily a file size limit. For instance,
one picture in question is a Hubble Space Telescope image that is 16,000px×16,000px.
Photo Gallery seems to stop being able to open images once they exceed around 10,000
or 12,000 pixels in size. Anything smaller than that opens just fine, including both
JPEGs and TIFFs. This is pretty annoying because I've been specifically collecting
a host of NASA's highest resolution space photos, some of which go up to 30,000 pixels
square but I can only view them in a browser. I'd much rather have the zooming and
panning capabilities of Photo Gallery, so that's why I'm making a stink about it.
I've already Googled this and not managed to find anything related to my problem,
since it's not a file format compatibility issue. Any help or insight into this would
greatly appreciated!
Here are some of my machine's specs:
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 @ 3.33GHz
8 GB DDR2 1066MHz
Nvidia Quadro FX 4600 768MB GPU
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP1
