Problems w/mini number keypad

A Dell Vostro 1510 laptop is my first laptop after more than 20 years using desktops.
OS is the Vista Home Basic.
I work with l numbers and text. A lot of numbers.
My first decision after buying the laptop was not to use the touchpad mouse and the
keyboard number keys.
I bought a wireless mouse, and the first mini number keypad I could lay my hands
on.
Then, my problems started: If I don't switch off the "Num Lock" in the mini keypad
(or on the laptop), when I start using the laptop alphabet keyes some of which have
alternative symbols/functions, the typed text turns on a mess like this - "the ty*ed
text t4rns 6n a 0ess 352e th5s",
I've heard that some keypads with an unsynchronized "num lock" solves the problem.

Any help will be welcome.

Regards,
Flores
