Is this basically what you see: Screen goes black, then you get the MS screen with 
a progress bar near the bottom, then black again until you see the welcome screen?

That's normal, along with pauses as Vista loads; as you've not provided any details, 
it is somewhat difficult to know if what you are seeing is what you ought to see.

(I don't recall precisely what happens during that last step if you don't use a password; 
if you do, you get the welcome and a place to type in the password.)
