Can't connect to network

My son just got a new computer, a Gateway. We have a modem and Netgear router, but we can't get the computer to recognize the network. We have a Netgear wireless adapter that had worked just fine on the old computer. We can see my neighbor's unsecured network, but not our secure one, so we can't even try to connect to it. This is my first experience with Vista, so I have no idea where to start. I've only worked with XP before. Any ideas on how we can fix this?

Not all XP Wireless Adaptors are Vista-compatible. The first thing to do is to check that.

It's compatible. It's just a few months old and I asked about compatibility when I bought it. My wireless network is recognized, but the computer can't connect to it. I've tried both the Netgear software and Vista software and both recognize the network, but neither will connect.

It wouldn't be the new computer. It must be settings in the Wireless device or the
router. It may be set to "hide" from unknown computers, and you have to add the new
PC to its OK list.
This is all a bit of guess by the way...

I got it to work. I had to add it manually to the list of networks and enter the key phrase instead of the password.

Thanks for letting us know! I am curious to know if this setting was on the PC or
the modem?
