Win XP Mapped Drives

When mapping network drives in Win XP, they do not automatically reconnect at startup. The mapping is enabled at startup, but Win XP does not automatically "connect"; they will only reconnect if you go to Explorer or you open a file on the mapped drive via a shortcut. This is causing problems with applications (Peachtree Accounting) which don't actually access the mapped drive when it starts, but merely checks to see that there is an existing connection. Microsoft says the fact that the mapped drives don't automatically reconnect is "by design" (how ignorant is that?). Does anybody have a solution or a workaround? Thanks.
