If your modem is hogging the CPU, or if it is sharing an IRQ with your sound card, it is probably the cause of your jittery sound. Switching to a hardware modem will probably solve your problem, but they cost $60-$70, where software modems cost $10. I guess it depends on how important it is to you to watch dvds on your computer and connect to the internet at the same time.
