There are several features or tools in Windows XP that generically one perhaps might
consider as being debug features. If you have a specific problem, I suggest you
describe it specifically. If you simply are looking for an education on tools available
in WinXP, get yourself a "how to" or similar book on the operating system, or find
any one of many available web-sites. If you have in mind some specific debug feature
in WinXP, do a Google search for, e.g.: "debug feature windows xp" or "debug windows
xp".
As to system restore:
-- are you sure the restore points to which you tried to restore were good or
valid points?
-- is your system restore service on, and set for automatic startup type?
-- you could try re-installing the system restore feature in XP, but note that
if you do this procedure, it will will remove all currently saved restore points/information.
To reinstall the system restore feature:
-- find the sr.inf file in the Windows\Inf folder;
-- right-click on that file, and then in its context menu click on Install; have
your (full-install) WinXP CD nearby;
-- when the process is done, reboot.
Perhaps if you told folks why you are trying to restore to an earlier time point,
help could be provided to address that particular problem, aside from the fact that
system restore won't work.
