Hi,

It is obvious you've got some file association corruption.
What has helped me in the past is the following:
1.Run System File check  Run > sfc /scannow
 Doesn't always work but it would find some cross  linked connections.
2.Check what file extensions the other programs use
  and re-associate them with the respective programs.
Also check which file extensions Office 2003 is associated with.
3.Do a Registry search.Don't bother with XP's Registry Editor for that,it's totally 
useless.
Just use it for editng only after you find the guilty entries using eg RegSeeker 
or similar
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
Type the name of the program in the "Finder" section.You'll get all the entries pertaining 
to the program(s).
Look for the wrong values.
4.Do the same for Office 2003.

A good registry cleaner would find those values too.
