Internet Connection Sharing not working with Inspiron 600m

I'm trying to set up Internet Connection Sharing on my laptop, running XP sp2.
My broadband modem is connected to the ethernet port, and I have a built-in wireless
modem that I was hoping to be the access point for the local network.
I had been able to do this years ago using Win98 and an Orinoco PCMCIA wireless card.
I forget how, but I was able to get that wireless card to function as a base station
of sorts (i.e. a named resource that other wireless connections could connect into).
I go through the wizard and it correctly picks out the two cards, but at the end
of the process the wireless card is not a connectable resource, even if I click the
advanced tab and mark that I want to share this resource.
I've done lots of permutations on connecting directly or indirectly (I'm connecting
to a DSL modem, so I think indirect is correct, but I've tried both).
I don't really even know how to debug this. I'm assuming that the internal modem
maybe can't function as an access point, even from the standpoint of a personal network
(really just want one other machine to share the printer and internet connection).
Thanks.
