I've just solved the problem. It was due to a logfile for Bootvis which was continually updating (growing in size) but wasn't registering correctly with system properties. Here's the solution: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1075157049 Many thanks to you both for trying to help. Chris
