New Router; New card

Our router pooped out on us and I had to get a new one. In the process of setting it up, I ran across a comment saying that some older computers may not be compatible with WPA. I remembered that. So, when my wife's computer didn't connect, I figured I needed to get a new card for it, which I did. My concern arose when I got to the part of the set up where it asks about what type of encryption I wanted to choose (TKIP or AES) and what pass phrase I wanted to use. I worried that if I set up a separate WPA for her card, it may not be able to communicate with the Router. My question: Can I skip this part and just tell it to connect?
