thank you to all for your help.
After about 5 hours of trying just about everything under the sun, I decided to remove
the battery even though I had not been using it. I had been using the laptop from
the mains electricity.
Simply physically removing the battery (which I think had reached the end of its
natural life) solved the problem.
Heaven only knows why the death of a battery, which was not even being used, should
cause the appearance of 'Hiddenfaxwindow'.
How absurd! And how frustrating!
