I have had similar problems with USB mice connected to the PS2 port via an adapter - they just seem to be flaky! If this is the case with your setup, try using the mouse plugged into a "proper" USB port. Cats are a problem! Mine will insist upon sitting on the mouse mat, on the keyboard, on top of the (old bulky) monitor while draping their tail in front of the screen etc :-) Consider investing in a UPS - I swear by mine.
