512 Mb is enough for most uses. Having a lot of applications running at once might demand more, but XP would cope. If you were doing a lot of audio/visual editing the system would surely benefit from more. 256 Mb is a minimum for practical purposes, 512 Mb is much better and 1 Gb puts it in the comfort zone.
