Missing Pictures in 'My Pictures' Folder

OS = MCE 2005, SP2
Just recently, random pictures within the 'My Pictures' folder have gone missing.
I have them organized in different folders and if the folder displays the thumbnails,
the pics are there. But folders that don't are empty. The weird thing is that 'properties'
doesn't show any change in file size, indicating the files are still there. I've
tried transferring the folders to another computer in hopes of recovering the pics,
with no luck.
This seems to have happened last weekend after I came back from a photoshoot and
uploaded pics from my SD card onto the HD. That was the first time I noticed it.
Any ideas why this happened and how I can go about recovering the files?
