The more she operates on that HDD the more likely she is to damage her valuable files.
At this point I'd cut and run. Find a friend who can mount the HDD as a slave drive
on another PC and copy the photos. If that's all that's done there's no danger of
transferring the infection.
Then she can try and recover the OS at her leisure - or repair or reinstall, whatever.
Its a matter of priorities - from what you say hers are clear ?
