Suggestions. Disable the internal drive in device manager - try again. If no good, run disk management (diskmgmt.msc) and change the external drive's letter from F: to E:. Try again. If no good, try uninstalling itunes and reinstalling it with internal drive disabled and external drive connected - I'd have thought it should pick it up then.
