They helped me immensely. I did what Steve suggested. I disabled the "faulty" drive, connected the external burner, which showed up as F:, used discmgmt.msc to change it to E:, uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and it worked! I still keep wondering whether its a coincidence that the drive stopped working after I installed iTunes 8 or it was iTunes which changed something which conked out my drive. I guess I'll never know.
