I've used System Restore successfully many times, but I've also had my share of failures, though never on my own systems. I "manage" my SR space, deleting all existing restore points and creating new ones every month or two. Don't know why but that seems to make it more reliable.

I would never depend on it though. I use Acronis True Image and DriveImage XML and keep two levels of backup. Even that is not good enough for irreplaceable files though, those I keep on DVD (pictures, documents, code for my web site, etc.).
