Get yourself a rewriteable DVD for practice, until you solve the problem.
I suspect not all IDE to USB converters are equally capable. CD/DVD drives use some
commands that aren't used by hard drives. Many of these converters, sometimes called
bridges, are designed for hard drives and don't properly support optical drives.
I think among other things, the converter must have ATAPI support.
