As Steve said, the interface specs need to specify that it will support an optical 
device.  There are differences between HDD and optical devices. 

There can also be issues that disconnect or cause the interface to "timeout", but 
I would start with making sure that the interface supports an optical device first... 
 You can buy enclosures for optical drives, but they aren't as common as for HDD's..
